We have planted Plumbago in the close vicinity of our fruit trees. We are noticing lot of pests, such as moths, white flies, attracted by Plumbago. Is it okay to leave plumbago in the vicinity of trees and do proper pest control? Please give us your suggestion.
It is fine to keep the Plumbago near your fruit trees, but you may want to control sucking insects on your fruit trees by spraying with horticultural oils such as Neem Oil. Your fruit trees will benefit from being kept insect free. Just be cautious when applying any pesticide by following all label directions for mixing and application.
I notice greenish/ black bugs on the new growth of my jasmine, which I’m spraying with systemic insect spray Bonide: how often can I spray? They seem to come and go. First they were on one plant and now (two weeks later) they are on all 10 of the plants. With the rain we have had they are really growing. I cut them back the first time I sprayed and it seemed to help. What do I do?
These are Aphids and can be controlled by spraying with horticultural oils like Neem Oil or by spraying with insecticidal soaps.
Is there anything that can be used on a newly seeded lawn for killing weeds that come up with the new grass? This lawn has not even been mowed yet – it’s still too young and small.
We would not recommend spraying lawns that are newly seeded with any type of weed killer during this tender period when those seedlings are still so small. Once the grass has begun to become established, you can spray with a weed killer that is listed as safe for the grass that you have seeded and that is listed to control the weeds that you have. Bear with it until the lawn has grown in and established, then you can apply a weed killer like Wipe Out or a weed and feed to control weeds and fertilize at the same time.
Something is eating my tomatoes and garden! I have a garden and a fence around it something is eating my tomatoes and now have moved to my lettuce and also they are chewing on my cucumber plants I don’t see any feet prints but of course my first thought would be Iguanas or those pesky chickens. Any suggestions?
The very best way to keep your vegetables safe from critters is to enclose your garden in an exclusion fence, like chicken wire or some other material. Alternatively you could use products like Shake Away or Scram around your plants. These will require regular re-application as described on the labels, especially after rain or irrigation.

Is there such a thing as mosquito repellent plants? If so, what are they?
Your best bet for ridding your garden of mosquitoes is to consider one of their breeding requirements—availability of water in which to lay their eggs—and follow the recommendations for ridding your garden of mosquito breeding sites.
We found some websites that listed some mosquito repellent plants. We have no proof one way or the other that any of these work. Our impression is that usually they don’t.
What is wrong with my lucky bamboo? My core is a pinkish color and is turning brown what is wrong or happening to my lucky bamboo?
Based on your description, it sounds as if the Lucky Bamboo is rotting. Once plant tissue becomes soft and rotten, it cannot reverse and become healthy again. It is best to remove all rotted tissue and try to save that portion of the plant that is still healthy.
I bought a phalaenopsis orchid about 3 weeks ago and all of the flowers have already fallen off. I have been using jacks orchid special 30-10-10 and have them in mild light. What am I doing wrong?
It is possible that the Orchid is not receiving sufficient light to keep the existing flowers going because their blooming cycle usually lasts for at least 2 months when they are not moved from one place to another. Continue keeping it moist but not wet and provide them with as much indirect sunlight as you can. The next cycle for your Phalaenopsis will probably be next year about this same time however it is likely that you can get them to bloom more than once a year. Good Luck.
Just planted herbs in pot, should I wait till sun goes down to water?
Watering in the evening is not a good practice to begin. Watering in the morning hours is the preferred schedule. If you’re newly planted herbs are showing signs of wilting them water them immediately. But if they are not wilting, they will survive nicely until the next morning when you can water them when the plants need it.
Indoor Vegetable Gardening: We love to grow our own tomatoes, but it is now too hot and soon to be too cold for them to grow. Is it possible for a tomato plant to grow indoors in a container and still produce? What type of tomato would work best?
Tomatoes require too much sunlight to successfully grow indoors and produce fruit. Certainly some hydroponic gardeners can do this with banks of plant lights and special hydroponic foods. If you have this sort of setup, then any type of tomato would work.
When and how to harvest basil.
The plant should have at least 3 sets of leaves at this point, and be at least 1 foot tall, to ensure that you are not going to kill the plant. The general recommendation though is that you wait until they have 4 to 6 sets of leaves so that the plant will flourish for a longer period of time. For the first pruning you should cut the plant right above the second set of leaves. This needs to be done every 3 weeks or so, to see a significant growth. If you do this correctly every time then you should be able to produce 15 – 24 cups of basil per plant per season.
Some people choose to harvest more frequently, with less cutting. It is less dramatic than if you only harvest every 3 weeks because you are only cutting the top set of leaves. It will lessen the amount of basil you have to use at that time, but you will be harvesting every week so it tends to produce the same amount over the long run.
Help my Areca Palm is turning yellow. Can you tell me what I am doing wrong?
Sounds like your Palms might need Potassium. Potassium-deficient areca palms require special care. Remove the yellow fronds as they will not recover. Use sulfur-coated potassium sulfate, applied to the soil at the rate on the label. If the areca palm has a micronutrient deficiency, apply a foliar-micronutrient spray, according to manufacturer’s instructions. If spider mites are causing the yellowing, use a pesticide labeled for the control of spider mites or come in to see us and we would be happy to help.
My Ficus Benjamina is browning and dying in spots and the leaves are falling. I notice that there are lots of bugs flying around; they look similar to nats. Do you have a treatment that can save my hedge?
This sounds like white fly has been attacking your Ficus. Insecticide oil sprays and soaps can help eradicate small whitefly populations, though they may not help much with severe infestations since the insecticide only kills whiteflies that come in direct contact with it. Cover the plant thoroughly, paying close attention to the underside of the leaves. Repeat spray applications every 7 to 10 days until all adult insects and larvae are gone. Applying imidacloprid or dinotefuran directly to the soil helps protect against whiteflies for six to nine months.
